Alan Turing's 100th Birthday

Alan Turing was a completely original thinker who shaped the modern world, but many people have never heard of him.
Before computers existed, he invented a type of theoretical machine now called a Turing Machine, which formalized what it means to compute a number. Our doodle for his 100th birthday shows a live action Turing Machine with twelve interactive programming puzzles (hint: go back and play it again after you solve the first six!).

A statue of Turing by sculptor Stephen Kettle, on display at Bletchley Park, where he worked to decipher the Enigma code during World War II.

Turing’s importance extends far beyond Turing Machines. His work deciphering secret codes drastically shortened World War II and pioneered early computer technology. He was also an early innovator in the field of artificial intelligence, and came up with a way to test if computers could think – now known as the Turing Test. Besides this abstract work, he was down to earth; he designed and built real machines, even making his own relays and wiring up circuits. This combination of pure math and computing machines was the foundation of computer science.

As a human being, Turing was also extraordinary and original. He was eccentric, witty, charming and loyal. He was a marathon runner with world class time. He was also openly gay in a time and place where this was not accepted. While in many ways the world was not ready for Alan Turing, and lost him too soon, his legacy lives on in modern computing.
Various iterations of the Turing doodle’s design.

Turing is a hero to us, so we wanted to make a special doodle for his centennial. We started by doing deep research into his work. Much of it is abstract and hard to show, so we went through a lot of designs before finding one that seemed workable. Turing Machines are theoretical objects in formal logic, not physical things, so we had to walk a fine line between technical accuracy and accessibility. We struggled especially to find a good representation for programs, and to choose puzzles of appropriate complexity; we did a lot of user testing and iteration, more than for any past doodle. We hope you will enjoy our tribute to this great man.

Latest Mario game aces multiplayer, may be Wii U’s first ‘killer app’

When Nintendo’s Wii U released a year ago, one of the criticisms it received was its relatively lackluster slate of launch games. While it did launch with the critically-well-received New Super Mario Bros. U (84% on Metacritic), that 2D platformer felt like more of a placeholder than a truly next-gen core Nintendo title. Where was this generation’s Super Mario 64, or Twilight Princess, or Super Mario Galaxy – a ‘killer app’ for the new generation of Nintendo games?
While it might be an exaggeration to say that Super Mario 3D World (releasing Friday with a retail price of $60) fits that bill, it’s certainly coming closer to earning the title than anything that has yet been released on the Wii U. Clocking in at an impressive 93% Metacritic score, Mario’s latest quest has gotten plenty of nods of approval from top game critics.
“3D World is an endless freewheeling treat of a game,” Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan raves in his 10/10 review. Donlan is particularly captivated by the much-ballyhooed Cat Suit, which “feels like one of the greatest power-ups of all time. … You can do astonishing things when you wield that fluffy uniform, but you’re vulnerable too.”
IGN’s Jose Otero singles out the multiplayer component for praise. “[M]ultiplayer stands out as one of Super Mario World 3D’s greatest accomplishments. … here the other three characters (Luigi, Toad, and Peach) aren’t obstacles, but rather competitive buddies all vying for first place at the end of each level. ... If you can find one, two, or three friends who can Mario as well as you can, you won’t forget the experience anytime soon."
Otero’s also impressed with the next-gen visuals, noting that “[T]here’s a surprising amount of texture detail stitched into these worlds, along with subtle lighting and effects that accentuate each onscreen action beautifully.”
Gametrailers’s Ryan Stevens, meanwhile, particularly praises the sophisticated design of the levels, which “play with different viewpoints, manipulate time, and provide plenty of opportunity for traditional leaps and flips.” Stevens gives the game a robust 9.5/10.
Plugged In

Quibbles float through some of these reviews, but nothing too serious. Eurogamer’s Donlan notes that the integration of the Wii U tablet is rather perfunctory, writing that “nods to the specific strengths of the Wii U - whatever they may turn out to be - are relatively few.” Stevens objects to some tweaks in the running/jumping controls, complaining that “the game’s take on acceleration is a step backwards,” and “it just feels wrong.”
Explicitly addressing the ‘killer app’ question, ZTGD’s Ken McKown states simply, in a 10/10 review, that “Super Mario 3D World justifies a Wii U.” That’s a bold statement, but surely music to Nintendo’s ears. Sales of the Wii U have long been disappointing – though a $50 price cut in September provided a much-needed uptick.
Everybody knows the Wii U is in danger of being relegated to ‘also-ran’ status next to the just-launching PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Equally, it’s a no-brainer that in order to shore up its sales, Nintendo must release the sorts of classics – preferably within the Mario and Zelda franchises – that have made them the last word in family-friendly gaming for almost three decades.
Super Mario 3D World, coming as it does in time for the holidays and after a Wii U price drop, may be just what the doctor ordered for Nintendo.

[ Relacionado : Super Mario World 3D galería de pantalla ]

Quick draw in game 8 of FIDE World Championship 19 Nov

DSC02426 fe
The eighth game of the FIDE World Championship Match, sponsored by Tamil Nadu state and currently ongoing in Chennai, finished in draw after 33 moves of play.
The challenger and world’s top rated player Magnus Carlsen changed his opening strategy and went for 1.e4 this time. The defending champion Viswanathan Anand echoed Carlsen’s repertoire and defended with Berlin Ruy Lopez, to the surprise of everyone in the press room here in Chennai.
Carlsen does not like to enter the Berlin endgame often with white pieces, and instead played the less frequent 5.Re1. The resulting pawn structure is symmetrical but with more pieces on the board.
Only two months ago Carlsen had a similar position with black against Hikaru Nakamura in Saint Louis. In 2010 Carlsen and Anand already tested the system, with same colours, in Kristiansund and Nanjing. All these games were drawn.
After the massive exchanges on the open e-file, the game ended in a draw on 33rd move. Carlsen spent only 20 minutes for the whole game. The current score is 5-3 in favour of the challenger.

The players were subjected to doping test after the eighth game and that accounted for a mild delay in the arrival at the media hall. The tests were done by Dr Jana Bellin. FIDE to be part of the International Olympic Committee initiated doping tests from the Bled Olympiad of 2002.
In the Bled 2002 Olympiad, Chennai’s women grandmaster Meenakshi was tested for doping after a random pick.

Might be NASA involve in plans to launch two married astronauts on an ambitious manned flyby mission to the Red Planet by early 2018

A nonprofit space exploration group revealed today (Nov. 20) exactly how it plans to launch two married astronauts on an ambitious manned flyby mission to the Red Planet by early 2018, a scenario that would involve NASA and federal funding along with a healthy dose of the pioneering spirit.
The Inspiration Mars project — which is led by multimillionaire Dennis Tito, the world's first space tourist — hopes to partner with NASA, using much of the space agency's equipment and expertise as well as an infusion of federal money to get off the launch pad by early January 2018.
"Perhaps several hundred million dollars in new federal spending can make this mission happen," Inspiration Mars officials wrote in a report, released today, that outlines the mission's proposed architecture. "We now call on our nation’s leaders to seize this singular opportunity to begin human exploration of the solar system and affirm America’s leadership throughout the world." [Private Mission to Mars Explained (Infographic)]
The proposed "Mission for America" would launch a married couple toward the Red Planet sometime between Dec. 25, 2017 and Jan. 5, 2018, to take advantage of a rare favorable alignment of Mars and Earth.
The two astronauts would not land on the Red Planet but would cruise within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of its surface before heading back home, eventually touching down on Earth in May 2019 after spending 501 days in space.
The flyby mission will help inspire the next generation of researchers and engineers, preserving America's competitive edge in science and technology, Inspiration Mars officials say. It should also lay the foundation for even more ambitious manned exploration of the solar system, they add.
"There'll be a lot of science return and techology return," Taber MacCallum, Inspiration Mars' chief technology officer, told reporters during a teleconference today. "We will, I think, sort of break the sound barrier for going to Mars and back, enabling a range of missions to occur in the future."
The current mission plan, as outlined in the report, calls for using NASA's Space Launch System mega-rocket (SLS), which is in development with a first flight slated for late 2017.
The flyby mission would require two launches in quick succession. In the first liftoff, an SLS would loft four payloads to Earth orbit: an SLS upper-stage rocket; a 600-cubic-foot habitat module derived from Orbital Sciences' Cygnus cargo vessel; a service module that would support the habitat module with power, propulsion and communications systems; and an Earth re-entry pod, which would be based on NASA's Orion capsule.
The second launch — this one likely using a commercial rocket — would deliver the two astronauts to orbit aboard a yet-to-be-selected private spaceship. The crewmembers would then transfer to the habitat module, and the SLS upper stage would propel them on toward Mars.
The married couple would spend virtually the entire mission in the habitat module, transferring to the re-entry pod in the last few hours of the mission.
Inspiration Mars officials acknowledge that making all of this happen will be challenging. The re-entry pod, for example, will have to protect the astronauts from the blazing heat generated when it slams into Earth's atmosphere at about 32,000 mph (51,500 km/h).
But it can be done, and the current plan — which emphasizes the use of technology already proven or in development whenever possible — gives the mission the best chance of success, Inspiration Mars officials say.
"We submit this report with unreserved faith in the men and women of NASA, with a singleminded commitment to surmounting every obstacle, and with complete confidence that this mission can be done," they write in the report.
