A bodybuilder who wanted to resemble The Incredible Hulk is instead feeling green, after the synthetic muscle injections he used caused myriad health problems and nearly led to the amputation of his arms.
Romario dos Santos Alves, a 25-year-old from Caldas Novas, Brazil, told Barcroft Media he started injecting his muscles with the mixture of oil and alcohol three years ago in an attempt to beef up his physique. But once he started, he found it difficult to stop.
After repeated injections left him sporting 25-inch biceps -- and in the hospital -- Alves says he realized he had to kick the habit for good. Doctors informed the bodybuilder his arms might need to be amputated because they had necrotic tissue, caused by bacteria infecting the tissue and eating away at itself. In addition, his kidneys were heavily damaged from toxins in the injections.
"I remember the doctor told me that they would need to amputate both arms," he said. "They said everything in there, all my muscles, were rock. It was either that or cut all of my muscles out."
The concoction injected by Alves is likely a cocktail known as "synthol," which the National Institutes of Health report is generally a mixture of oil, the anesthetic lidocaine as a painkiller and alcohol as a sterilizer. Use of the physique-enhancing solution can lead to nerve damage, embolism, heart attack, stroke and infections.
Fortunately for Alves, doctors were able to save his arms by extracting the hardened muscles. He says he's still into bodybuilding, but now he's committed to bulking up naturally.

My kids were watching the daily show that Disney used to play , but I heard them whispering "hey look that girl talking like a boy and the boy dressing like a girl..." then my little one ask me - Dad, Is it normal to be like that? I strongly and very angry replay NO my little male boy this is bu11$h1t from Disney and i will channel the channel right now.

LAS VEGAS – The identity of the best fighter of this generation was never really in doubt.
Oh, some wanted to contest Floyd Mayweather's position as the best boxer of his time and made points of varying strength about the quality of his opposition, the timing of some of his bigger fights and what was perceived as an unwillingness to engage.

Mayweather, though, erased whatever little doubt that remained with an unquestionable victory over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden in a match which was as much about the incredible sums of money it generated as it was about the talent of the fighters.
Judge Dave Moretti had it 10 rounds to two, or 118-110 for Mayweather. Judges Glenn Feldman and Burt Clements each saw it 116-112, giving Mayweather eight of the 12 rounds. Yahoo Sports had it 115-113 for Mayweather.
“He’s a tough competitor,” Mayweather said of his vanquished foe.
Two months after his 38th birthday, Mayweather turned back the man whom fans have clamored for him to fight for more than five years.
The crowd pulled passionately for the Filipino superstar, who rose from abject poverty to become a politician, a musician and one of the best boxers in the world. Every time he landed, they roared. His best shot came in the fourth when he rocked Mayweather, but he had trouble getting past the jab or penetrating Mayweather’s defense.
On this night, though, he was no match for Mayweather, who improved his record to 48-0 with perhaps the most significant victory of his professional career.
"I thought I caught him many more times than he caught me," Pacquiao said. "I was never hurt. I was very surprised by the scores. I thought I hit him much more than he hit me."
With one fight remaining on the contract he signed with CBS/Showtime in early 2013, Mayweather has the opportunity to match the 49-0 record of former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. He said he’d retire after a fight in September.
On Saturday, facing the rival he'd been accused for years of ducking, Mayweather showed his class by cleanly outboxing Pacquiao and winning a unanimous decision. The reach advantage was clear between them and Mayweather popped Pacquiao repeatedly with his jab.
He did it the way he has for the past 19 years, using speed, quickness, impeccable timing, punching accuracy and most of all an incredible ring awareness to throttle his smaller rival.
Pacquiao landed just 81 of 429 punches, a puny 18.9 percent and around the average connect percentage against Mayweather. Mayweather landed nearly twice as many shots, connecting at 34 percent while landing 148 of 435.

There has always been controversy swirling around Mayweather and the days ahead of the Pacquiao fight were no exception. Because of the nature of the match, the interest in the fight was far great and so, too, was the media scrutiny.
His history of domestic violence, which he'd hoped would have been overlooked after his 2012 release from the Clark County, Nev., Detention Center, became a theme of much of the pre-fight coverage.
There were groups protesting outside the arena both on Friday after the weigh-in and on Saturday before the bout. A dispute arose early Saturday when two reporters, Rachel Nichols of CNN and Michelle Beadle of ESPN and HBO, tweeted that they were denied credentials. Both women have covered the domestic violence angle aggressively. Promoters vehemently denied that allegation.
But Mayweather, as he always has been in the boxing ring, was implacable. If any of it weighed on him, it was impossible to tell by looking at him and even more difficult to discern by watching him box.
And so, this era will officially and forever be "The Mayweather Era" – one he dominated not so much with power and knockouts but rather with defensive excellence and marketing brilliance.
He began his career as a highly touted bronze medal winner from the 1996 U.S. Olympic team known as "Pretty Boy" Floyd. He ended it as the trash-talking, bejeweled multi-millionaire who set a new standard for how athletes should handle their careers.

He's outraged fans, particularly the old-timers, by calling himself "The Best Ever." And while that's a gross overstatement and ignoring the greatness of Sugar Ray Robinson and a number of other fighters, a large part of it is marketing shtick to call attention to himself.
But while there is a debate about where he deserves to rank on the all-time list – a panel commissioned by Yahoo Sports ranked him 19th last week, before the fight – there is no doubt that he is the best of his time.
And at the end of the day, that is all that can be asked for a boxer.
So maybe Mayweather is TBE: Just make it The Best of the Era and we can all live with that.

Agencia SINC.- Investigadores del Hospital General de Massachussets han creado un dispositivo que se acopla a un teléfono inteligente y que es capaz de registrar imágenes microscópicas de la composición molecular de las células y los tejidos. El análisis digital de estas muestras permite identificar rápidamente algunos tipos de tumores como el papiloma humano y el cáncer linfático a un precio mucho más barato que los sistemas tradicionales de diagnóstico.

Los autores explican en un estudio, publicado en el último número de la revista PNAS, que este dispositivo, denominado D3 (diagnóstico de difracción digital), cuenta con un módulo de imagen con una luz LED acoplado a un teléfono inteligente que registra fotografías de alta resolución gracias a su cámara. Su campo de visión es superior al del microscopio tradicional y en una imagen puede recoger datos de más de 100.000 células de la sangre o tejido.
Estos datos son enviados a través de un servicio seguro de encriptado en la nube a un servidor de procesamiento gráfico, donde son analizados. Después, los resultados son rápidamente transmitidos al D3, explican los investigadores.
Para realizar el análisis molecular de tumores una muestra de sangre es marcada con partículas muy pequeñas –de diferente tamaño y composición– adheridas a la zona de la posible enfermedad. Una vez que la imagen es registrada, se puede determinar la presencia de moléculas nocivas analizando los diferentes patrones de difracción seguidos por estas mini partículas, añaden estas fuentes.
El algoritmo desarrollado por los investigadores permite distinguir las células de las partículas y analizar hasta 10 MB de datos en menos de nueve centésimas de segundo.César Martín Castro
Misma eficacia que el sistema tradicional.- Este dispositivo ha sido probado en un ensayo piloto en el que se analizaron las muestras de biopsia de cérvix de 25 mujeres que habían presentado resultados anormales en la prueba de Papanicolau (utilizada para detectar el cáncer cervicouterino). El análisis D3 dividió rápidamente estas muestras entre aquellas con alto riesgo, bajo riesgo o benignos. Los resultados coincidieron con los del análisis patológico tradicional.
También se ha utilizado este dispositivo para el análisis de muestras de linfa tomadas con aguja fina, pudiendo diferenciar entre aquellas con linfoma de las que solo presentaban un aumento del ganglio linfático. Además del análisis de proteínas, el sistema fue mejorado para poder detectar virus del papiloma humano en el ADN.
Según César Castro, un reconocido oncólogo que ha participado en la investigación, este aparato responde a la “necesidad de un diagnóstico rápido utilizando tecnología móvil que pueda ser utilizado en las zonas más desfavorecidas”.
Con el dispositivo, el coste actual del análisis de cada muestra es de tan solo 1,7 euros, un precio que se espera poder disminuir a medida que se mejore el sistema.
Por su parte Hakho Lee, coautor del estudio, asegura que el equipo “continuará desarrollando esta tecnología investigando la posibilidad de utilizar el D3 en el análisis de proteínas y marcadores de ADN de otros catalizadores de enfermedades. También integrarán el software en bases de datos más amplias, y efectuarán estudios clínicos en lugares con una asistencia sanitaria precaria y en entornos rurales.
