XPRIZE Foundation and Qualcomm Foundation Set to Revolutionize Healthcare with Launch of $10 Million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE

Global Incentivized Competition Looks to Integrate Technology Advancements to Enable Diagnosis on Mobile Devices, Giving Consumers Access to Healthcare in the Palm of Their Hand

Las Vegas, NV (January 10, 2012) — The XPRIZE Foundation and Qualcomm Foundation today announced the launch of the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, a global competition to revolutionize healthcare. In this competition, teams will leverage technology innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and wireless sensing – much like the medical Tricorder of Star Trek® fame – to make medical diagnoses independent of a physician or healthcare provider. The goal of the competition is to drive development of devices that will give consumers access to their state of health in the palm of their hand.
The announcement was made at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) during Qualcomm Incorporated Chairman and CEO and Qualcomm Foundation Chair, Dr. Paul Jacobs’ keynote address. Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Chairman and CEO of the XPRIZE Foundation, joined Dr. Jacobs on stage to introduce the competition.

“There is a dire need to improve access to healthcare globally and provide consumers with an opportunity to be active participants in their own health,” said Dr. Diamandis. “The Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE will incent the creation of technologies that can empower the consumer with the ability to decide when, where and how to seek health information and care.”
The $10 million top prize will be awarded to the team that develops a mobile platform that most accurately diagnoses a set of 15 diseases across 30 consumers in three days. Teams must also deliver this information in a way that provides a compelling consumer experience while capturing real time, critical health metrics such as blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature. The winning solutions will enable consumers in any location to quickly and
effectively assess health conditions, determine if they need professional help and answer the question, “What do I do next?” when it comes to their health.
“Health care today certainly falls far short of the vision portrayed in Star Trek. By sponsoring the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition, the Qualcomm Foundation will stimulate the imaginations of entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists and doctors to create wireless health services and technologies that improve lives, increase consumer access to healthcare and drive efficiencies in the healthcare system,” said Dr. Jacobs. “This competition will accelerate the development of tools that can empower consumers to take charge of their own bodies and manage their own care.”
By launching this incentivized competition, the XPRIZE Foundation and Qualcomm Foundation
seek to make 23rd century science fiction a 21st century medical reality. The Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE looks to empower consumers to take control of their own healthcare and improve the quality of life for people, everywhere.
The XPRIZE Foundation will have a presence in Booth #30313, Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) South Hall 3, Upper Level and Booth #3231, LVCC North Hall. For more information about the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, visit:

X Prize Competition Could Make 'Tricorder' A Reality

August 31, 2014 5:40 PM ET
Many Star Trek gadgets have made the journey from science fiction to real life. Arun Rath talks to Grant Campany about the X Prize Foundation's competition to b

ring the medical tricorder to life.

ARUN RATH, HOST:
Thanks for listening. It's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR West. Star Trek geeks, like me, delight in talking about the technological advances predicted on the show - cell phones, tablet computers, 3D printing, Google Glass, medical telemetry. There's a new push to bring another device from the USS Enterprise to the mainstream - the medical tricorder. That's the gadget Doctor McCoy would use to diagnose anyone who got sick. He'd scan it over them as it made its signature sound.
(SOUNDBITE OF TRICORDER)
RATH: The X Prize Foundation launched the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize competition in 2012, challenging teams of scientists all over the world to design an instrument able to capture vital signs and diagnose 15 diseases. The finalists were announced this week. Grant Campany is a senior directory with the X Prize Foundation.

GRANT CAMPANY: There's the need for a health system that really is responsive to the needs of the population. And a lot of these diseases and conditions that we're talking about result from many different variables - from the environment, your genetics and your own behavior. What we don't have is an effective means to measure all of these things and to take these data points simultaneously and over a period of time. And these devices will be engineered ultimately to do that.
RATH: Over 300 teams initially registered to compete for the $10 million prize. Now it's down to 10.
CAMPANY: The teams that actually are in the top 10 had to submit a large amount of data to explain to us and to judges how they were going to go about diagnosing things from anemia, urinary tract infection, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, stroke, as well as monitor five vital signs continuously for 72 hours. So it's a pretty audacious goal.
RATH: The finalists are from all over the world - from the U.S., Taiwan, Slovenia, India, Canada. And they're all taking different approaches to the challenge.
CAMPANY: They're looking at a myriad of technologies - things that measure the volatile compounds in your breath, things that measure your pulse, using sources of light and even photo optics. So you can imagine having sensors in your clothes, applications that monitor how many steps you take, how much you're exercising. We don't put any restrictions on what these teams do.
RATH: There's one big difference between the vision for the X Prize tricorder and Star Trek. On Star Trek, medical professionals, like Doctor Pulaski, use the equipment.
(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION)
DIANA MULDAUR: (As Dr. Pulaski) How are you?
MARINA SIRTIS: (As Deanna Troi) Well, when I first called you, I was feeling intense pain.
RATH: But the focus of the X Prize tricorder competition is to put the technology in the hands of the consumer. That's right, you get to be Doctor McCoy. Here's a clip from a promo video for one of the products in the works from a U.S. team called Scanadu.
(SOUNDBITE OF COMMERCIAL)
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: What if instead of fearing the worst when you notice something out of the ordinary, you could identify the condition yourself?
RATH: And this one's from a UK-based team called Zensor.
(SOUNDBITE OF COMMERCIAL)
UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Detected arrhythmias and rate breaches are transmitted over standard Wi-Fi with all vital signs monitored and recorded 24/7.
RATH: But Grant Campany says they're not trying to replace your family doctor.
CAMPANY: I think it's a tool for physicians. I think what we're seeing, not only in this country but around the world, is that there's a tremendous shortage of doctors. We need to have innovation that allows us to have more tools and empowerment for consumers.
RATH: The 10 Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize finalists have until April to design, develop and deliver up to 30 working tricorder devices. After that, consumer testers will take the devices home and evaluate them. Judges make the final decision in January 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Exorcism & Demonic Spirits:

Exorcism & Demonic Spirits:
Retired from a career with the NYPD, Ralph Sarchie now devotes his life to investigating cases of demonic possession and assisting in the exorcisms. The recent movie, Deliver Us from Evil, was inspired by Sarchie's investigative experiences and the often-dangerous paranormal investigations he's immersed himself in. The movie, which fictionalized elements from his book and real-life story, portrayed his career as a police officer going hand-in-hand with his exorcism work, but in reality he kept the two occupations separate, Sarchie said.
On Tuesday's show, he discussed several cases he's worked on, as well as the stages of demonic activity and possession. One such case he called "the Halloween of Horror," and it started out with a demonic spirit masking itself as the spirit of a deceased person. The entity singled out a woman in a family to focus on, and began telepathically communicating with her. As things progressed, it began to physically assault one of her children in order to break down her will so it could possess her. After about three months, the family sought out help and her exorcism was successful, Sarchie recounted, adding that he only works on cases where his participation is requested by the afflicted family.
The first stage of demonic interaction is called "infestation" where small or subtle phenomena occur such as scratching or tapping noises, or hearing your name called when you're alone, he detailed. The oppression/obsession stage is an acceleration of the infestation where, for instance, the tapping sound will have increased to a pounding, physical attacks occur, and the afflicted acts out negative or sinful behaviors. This can lead up to the possession stage where the person can no longer resist the demon, he continued. The late Father Malachi Martin told Sarchie that there's going to be rise in child possessions as a kind of chastisement, because parents aren't teaching their children about God, or turning to him.

Brazilian Town Run by Women Is Looking for a Few Good (Single) Men

Brazilian Town Run by Women Is Looking for a Few Good (Single) Men

Odd News
I'm sure many men have dreamed of an island completely populated by exotic women. Of course, fantasy is fantasy, but what if it were reality? In a certain regard, it is — in Noiva do Cordeiro, Brazil.
It's a scenic rural town in the hills outside of Belo Horizante with one big quirk, or perk, depending on whom you talk to. This Brazilian town is inhabited and governed almost entirely by women, its population consisting of more than 600 mostly single women aged 20 to 25. Sons are sent away at 18, and spouses are banned from the town except on weekends.
Now the women have made an appeal to bring more single men to the town. But there's one caveat: Men have to follow their rules. OK, that shouldn't be too hard to do. But the truth is that any incoming men have to follow all the guidelines that the women created, from town planning to farming, religion, and more.
The motivation for the way the town is set up is a direct result of its history: The town was founded in 1891 by Maria Senhorinha de Lima, who had been excommunicated as an adultress after leaving a man she had been forced to marry. Over time, she was joined by other single women and female-headed families, and the insular society came into being. In the 1940s, an evangelical pastor, Anisio Pereira, took one of the town's 16-year-old girls as his wife and founded a church there, imposing strict puritanical rules. When he died in 1995, the town's women determined that they would never again be subject to male domination, and they dismantled Pereira's church.
Resident Nelma Fernandes, 23, said, "The only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us…. We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don't want to have to leave the town to find a husband." If Web traffic is any indication of interested possible suitors, it appears that the town's plea worked: Its website went down because of all the visitors to the site. So, fellas looking for an opportunity like this, pack your bags — Brazilian girls are calling.

Alerting all single males: This town of beautiful women wants you
Appeal: These woman are looking for eligible bachelors (Picture: Facebook)
It’s the kind of news that could make Don Juan feel faint.
A Brazilian town that is entirely made up of young, ‘extremely attractive’ women has made an appeal – for single men.
Noiva do Cordeiro, in southeast Brazil, has a 600-strong population that is entirely female, with sons sent away at 18 and the few husbands only allowed in town on weekends.
And while that might sound perfect to some, the young women in the town are growing increasingly frustrated at the absence of men – and have made an appeal for eligible bachelors to step forward.
Any men in the town are expected to live according to 'female' rules (Picture: Facebook)

‘Here, the only men we single girls meet are either married or related to us, everyone is a cousin. I haven’t kissed a man for a long time,’ Nelma Fernandes, 23, told The Mirror.
‘We all dream of falling in love and getting married. But we like living here and don’t want to have to leave the town to find a husband.’
The unusual settlement was founded by Maria Senhorinha de Lima, branded an adulterer and excommunicated after fleeing her forced marriage.
Other women rejected by society joined her in isolation – and Noiva do Cordeiro was born.

A TOWN consisiting entirely of women has made an appeal for batchelors - but only those willing to live by female rules, it was reported today (wed)...Over 600 women make up the population of Noiva do Cordeiro, southeast Brazil - most aged between 20 and 35...Although some are married with families, their husbands are made to work away from home, only being allowed to return at weekends...Sons are sent away when they reach 18 and no other men are permitted to live in the town, which sits in a remote valley 60 miles east of Belo Horizonte...The settlement dates back to the 1890s, when a young woman and her family were excommunicated from the Catholic church after she was accused of adultery...Slowly more single women and mother-only families joined the community, and over the decades several attempts by men to intervere in their way of life made them adopt a strictly 'no male' policy...
The residents say the town is ‘prettier and more organised’ than it would be if men ran it (Picture: Facebook)
But before you book your flights, gents, there is a caveat:
‘Do what we say and live according to our rules,’ says Nelma.
‘There are lots of things that women do better than men. Our town is prettier, more organised, and far more harmonious than if men were in charge.
‘And there’s always time to stop and gossip, try on each other’s clothes and do each other’s hair and nails.’
Form an orderly queue, fellas.
