Pro and cons about Tension over a chess table

La Casa Blanca confirmó este miércoles la autenticidad del video de yihadistas que muestra la decapitación del periodista estadounidense James Foley, secuestrado en Siria en noviembre de 2012.
“La Inteligencia de EE.UU. ha analizado el video recientemente difundido que muestra a los estadounidenses James Foley y Steven Sotloff. Hemos llegado a la conclusión de que el vídeo es auténtico”, aseguró Caitlin Hayden, portavoz del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad de la Casa Blanca en una breve nota.
La confirmación oficial se produce poco después de que el Global Post, medio para el que trabajaba Foley, informase esta mañana que la Oficina Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) había comunicado a la familia del periodista que era verdadero.
En el video titulado “Un mensaje para Estados Unidos”, difundido ayer martes a través de los foros yihadistas y colgado en Youtube, Foley se despide de su familia y acusa al gobierno de Estados Unidos de ser el culpable de su ejecución por su reciente intervención en Iraq, antes de ser degollado ante la cámara por un encapuchado que habla en inglés.
En las imágenes, además de Foley, de 40 años, aparece otro periodista estadounidense secuestrado, Steven Joel Sotloff, cuya vida “depende de la próxima decisión de Obama”, según dice en la grabación el autor de la decapitación.
Los familiares de Foley, que ya había sido secuestrado en Libia en 2011, aseguraron en un comunicado en enero de 2013 que un grupo desconocido de hombres armados lo había secuestrado en una zona del noroeste de Siria en noviembre de 2012.
Por su parte, la policía británica, Scotland Yard, confirmó que investiga el video que muestra la decapitación de Foley, en el que el supuesto yihadista que lo ejecuta habla inglés con acento británico. Se admite que el verdugo del periodista podría ser originario del Reino Unido.
La grabación comienza con el discurso del presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, del pasado 7 de agosto en el que anunció el comienzo de los bombardeos sobre el Estado Islámico (EI) en el norte de Iraq, para frenar su avance hacia el Kurdistán y permitir la asistencia humanitaria a miles de desplazados.
Posteriormente, aparece Foley pidiendo a su familia y amigos que se levanten contra las autoridades estadounidenses, de quienes dice que pusieron “el último clavo en su ataúd” por los bombardeos en Iraq.
“Desearía tener más tiempo, desearía ver a mi familia de nuevo, pero ese barco ya ha zarpado. A fin de cuentas, supongo que desearía no ser estadounidense”, dice Foley, sereno y vestido con un atuendo anaranjado en una localización desértica no especificada.
Finalmente, el hombre encapuchado, en un inglés con acento británico, amenaza a Estados Unidos y asegura que “los musulmanes de todo tipo y condición han aceptado al Estado Islámico como sus líderes”.
“Cualquier intento tuyo, Obama, de negar a los musulmanes su derecho a vivir en seguridad bajo el califato resultará en el derramamiento de sangre de tu pueblo“, dice el yihadista, que aparece blandiendo un cuchillo. Tras ello, el encapuchado degüella a Foley y finalmente aparece su cabeza encima de su cuerpo inerte.
El video termina con el encapuchado amenazando de muerte a otro periodista estadounidense secuestrado, Steven Joel Sotloff, cuya vida “depende de la próxima decisión de Obama”, insiste.
