How to Open a JNLP File

How to Open a JNLP File

by Chris Hoffman
JNLP files are opened with Java when it's installed on your computer. Learn how to customize your PC's settings to have them open correctly.
Oracle’s Java plug-in supports Java Network Launch Protocol files, which point to Java applets or applications. With Java installed, you can click a link to a JNLP file on a Web page to automatically run the Java program or applet specified in the JNLP file on your computer. JNLP files run in the Java Web Start application included with Java, so you can also directly run JNLP files by opening them with the Javaws.exe program.
Open the Java.com website in your Web browser and click the “Free Java Download” button to download and install Java on your computer if it isn’t already installed. Double-click the downloaded .exe file and follow the instructions on your screen to install it.
Close and restart any open Web browser windows to detect and enable the Java plug-in.
Locate a link to a JNLP file on a Web page and click it to launch the JNLP file or double-click a JNLP file on your computer to open it.

Tip

  • Verify Java is associated with JNLP files using the Java Control Panel window. Type "programs" in the Windows Search field at the bottom of the desktop and press Enter. Select the “Java (32-bit)” option. Click the “Advanced” tab at the top of the Java Control Panel window, click the plus sign to the left of “JNLP File/MIME Association,” select “Always Allow” or “Prompt” and click “OK.” JNLP files won’t work if you select “Never Allow.”
You can also use the Open With feature in Windows to associate JNLP files with Java Web Start. Right-click a JNLP file and click “Open With.” Select the “Java Web Start Launcher” application in the list or click “Browse,” browse to the “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre[version]\bin” folder on your computer and double-click the “Javaws.exe” program file. Browse to the “Program FIles” directory if you don’t see the “Program Files (x86)” directory.
